Dear Friends,
Although over 219,000 North Carolinians followed the Wilmington Star News and Charlotte Observer's
endorsement of my experience and qualifications for State Treasurer by voting for me, it was not
enough to prevail. Please accept my heartfelt gratitude for your support and hard work during this campaign.
Participating in one of North Carolina's truly historic elections was an honor and privilege. The
historical significance of this election is best appreciated by reading my friend Rob Christensen's
outstanding new book,
The Paradox of Tar Heel Politics.
This campaign was also personally gratifying to Deborah and me, as traveling across the state with
Avery and Schuyler enabled us to demonstrate that not all North Carolinians enjoy a nice home, a
good school, proper medical care, or equal treatment by others.
We were able to reinforce our family values, encouraging our daughters by example, to speak up for
those voices not heard. No words can adequately convey how much Deborah, Avery and Schuyler's love
and support in this campaign has meant to me, other than to say I am extraordinarily blessed and fortunate.
Dad lost an election, but Avery and Schuyler learned, in order to make the world a better place
for those most in need, they must be someone
'who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions
and spends themselves in a worthy cause; who at the best, knows in the end the triumph of high
achievement, and who, at worst, if they fail, at least fail while daring greatly; so that their
place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory or defeat,' to
paraphrase the eloquent Theodore Roosevelt.
And isn't this historic election all about making North Carolina, America and the world a better place?
